It’s important to remember that this is only a beta release, so you shouldn’t rely on DaVinci Resolve 18.5 for critical projects. Hopefully, the official release will come in the next six months, however, so we shouldn’t have too long to wait. Blackmagic Design has announced the latest version of its DaVinci Resolve video editing, color grading and visual effects program. DaVinci Resolve 18.5 introduces dozens of new tools, including four new AI tools, over 150 feature upgrades, and major updates to the Cut page. DaVinci Resolve is one of the most comprehensive editing applications available, enabling a professional standard not just in nonlinear editing but in color grading, audio post, and visual effects. It gets better with every update, and there are some great new features in Resolve 17.

I’ve been reviewing software for PCMag since 2008, and I still get a kick out of seeing what's new in video and photo editing software, and how operating systems change over time. I was privileged to byline the cover story of the last print issue of PC Magazine, the Windows 7 review, and I’ve witnessed every Microsoft win and misstep up to the latest Windows 11. Because of its complexity, though, it’s not the best choice for less experienced editors. If you want to create basic videos without spending much time learning the ropes, there are better options, such as Hitfilm Express. However, some improvements in Resolve 17 have made the interface more intuitive.
Another new feature is ‘Intelligent Media Management’ to make it easier to stay linked to assets when you’re working remotely or collaborating with others. Blackmagic claims low latency and high-quality 10-bit images ideal for remote editing, grading and instant feedback. Available only on the Studio version is Neural Engine, which adds artificial intelligence object removal, Auto Color Balance and Matching and facial recognition software.
Studio version and Speed Editor
Use of proxy media makes this more efficient, and the software integrates with Frame.io, an online collaborative video editing platform that can sync projects. All video editing software requires a high-spec computer to run well, and DaVinci Resolve Studio is no exception. In a nutshell, you can enjoy support for AVCHD, AVC-Intra and H.264 using ALL-I intraframe encoding, as well as 10-bit encoding.
Controls for any effects you apply show up in the Inspector panel, which you can open from the top right button. You can control any effects for which they make sense with keyframes, which smoothly animate the effect’s position or intensity from the start keyframe to the end one. The key thing is that as well as the paid DaVinci Resolve Studio version, there’s a free DaVinci Resolve 18 version that anyone can download and use, and which offers amazing capabilities at no cost.
All of these tools will save users hours, if not days of hard manual work but they do bring a steep learning curve since they’re advanced features. One way of speeding up your workflow in the edit is to use the $295/£225 DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor keyboard which can let you edit using both hands. It’s a professional-style keyboard with transport controls on the right side and edit functions on the left. This means you can use the search dial and source tape buttons with your right hand to locate the shots you want.
